Our HORIZON curriculum:

🌿 Our Approach in a Sentence

We meet each child where they are, nurturing emotional security first, following their interests, and weaving academic learning naturally through play, relationships, and curiosity.

Early Years Foundation Stage- Discoverers.

Our EYFS curriculum in AP settings focuses on relationships, emotional security, and child-led exploration.

Core Principles

  • Child-Centred: Built around each child’s interests, strengths, and needs.

  • Relational & Therapeutic: Trust, safety, and emotional support come first.

  • In-the-Moment Planning: Adults respond to learning as it happens.

  • Flexible & Nurturing: Broad EYFS goals guide us, but children’s engagement shapes the journey.

Aims

  • Build emotional security and self-regulation.

  • Develop communication, independence, and resilience.

  • Support engagement through play and interest-led learning.

Curriculum in Practice
Learning unfolds through continuous and enhanced provision:

  • Prime Areas: Personal, Social & Emotional Development; Communication & Language; Physical Development.

  • Specific Areas: Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts & Design.

Planning & Assessment

  • Observe → Capture → Extend → Record (In-the-Moment Planning).

  • Evidence collected through photos, notes, and “WOW” moments.

  • Guided by Development Matters and each child’s EHCP/AP plan.

Environment

  • Nurturing, sensory-rich spaces with calm areas for regulation.

  • Open-ended, imaginative play resources indoors and outdoors.

Key Stage 1- Explorers.

At KS1, we continue a playful, responsive, and therapeutic approach while gently linking learning to the National Curriculum.

Core Principles

  • Nurture and regulation before academics.

  • Child agency - learners lead, adults scaffold.

  • In-the-Moment Planning connects interests to curriculum outcomes.

Aims

  • Develop emotional regulation, social communication, and independence.

  • Encourage curiosity, exploration, and reflection.

  • Cover curriculum areas (English, Maths, Science, etc.) through meaningful, child-led contexts.

Why It Works

  • Children learn through freedom and play, with staff mapping progress retrospectively.

  • Academic and emotional growth are valued equally.

Key Stage 2- Adventurers.

KS2 builds on the same principles with more project-based and real-life learning linked to children’s interests.

Core Principles

  • Choice and autonomy drive engagement.

  • Emotional wellbeing and relationships underpin learning.

  • Project-based learning connects passions to curriculum skills.

Aims

  • Strengthen confidence, resilience, and curiosity.

  • Embed literacy and numeracy through real, purposeful contexts.

  • Prepare for transition and life skills beyond school.

Curriculum in Action

  • English: Creative writing, digital storytelling, blogging.

  • Maths: Real-world problem-solving (money, measurement, coding).

  • Science & Humanities: Hands-on projects linked to curiosity and interest.
